5 Mysterious Aircraft Disappearances

A pumpkin in the sky with a plane writing out

With Halloween approaching, we thought we’d track down 5 of the most mysterious aircraft disappearances of all time! So, gather ‘round while we talk about some spooky unsolved mysteries!

Our Top Five Picks this Halloween for Mysterious Aircraft Disappearances

  1. Amelia Earhart – No list about aircraft disappearances would be complete without Amelia Earhart! This enduring mystery began on July 2nd, 1937, when she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, took off from Lae, New Guinea, in a Lockheed Electra 10E. Their flight around the world was almost complete when the Lockheed Electric disappeared over the Pacific Ocean and was never heard from again.
  2. Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 – On March 8th, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared along with 239 of its passengers and crew. Rescuers spent months searching the southern India Ocean and the seabed but ultimately found nothing.
  3. Vancouver Douglas DC-4 – In 1951 Vancouver, the Douglas DC-4 departed for the Anchorage Airport. The weather began to worsen, providing visibility of just 500 feet. No trace of the aircraft or its occupant was recovered.
  4. Flying Tiger Flight 739 – During the preliminary stages of the Vietnam War in 1962, the US Army Flying Tiger Flight 739 disappeared over the Pacific Ocean in the Mariana Trench. No distress call was ever received, and nothing was ever found.
  5. Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 – Lastly, and perhaps the creepiest story on our list, is Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. There were five crew members and 40 passengers aboard, including members of the Uruguayan rugby team. On October 13th, 1972, the aircraft disappeared over the Andes. Unlike the other stories on our list, the wreckage of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was found 72 days after the crash. Only 16 survivors emerged, and their harrowing tale of starvation and cannibalism of the other passengers earns them the most Halloween-worthy story on our list!

Here at CW Flight, we want to wish you a safe and happy Halloween!
