Balancing Flight School & College

If you’ve always wanted to take flying lessons, but you’re afraid that you won’t be able to balance it with college. We won’t lie and tell you it’s easy, but with the right preparation and approach, it’s definitely possible! Below are a few tips on how to pursue your dream while still keeping your GPA up!

Ask your flight school about flexible training schedules

Most private pilot instructors want to see their students succeed! They are more likely to work around your schedule to ensure you get the proper training and certification. Before enrolling in any flight school, make sure they’re able to be flexible when building a training program focused on your needs.

Focus on goals and stick to your schedule

A strict schedule will be of great assistance when it comes to staying on track to graduate both college and flight school. Keep a detailed calendar and update it frequently with additions and changes. Keep your goals in mind, so it’s easier to stay motivated to keep going, even when it gets tough!

Separate ground school and flight training

Typically it’s best to do ground school at the same time as flight training, but they can be separated if you need to lighten your load. First, sign up for ground school to gain aeronautical knowledge like planning routes, reading maps, and learning weather patterns. You’ll be tested on this knowledge, and you’ll need passing grades before you can become certified. Once ground school is completed, you can begin flight training even more prepared.

If you’re a college student considering flight school, keep in mind that good pilots have to use good judgment, time management, and risk management skills. These are the same skills you’ll need to apply to become a successful pilot.
