Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and hold a sport pilot certificate. A commercial pilot certificate is not required, but you should have at least 150 hours of flight time, including at least 100 hours as pilot in command. Additionally, you’ll need to pass two FAA knowledge exams, the Sport Pilot Flight Instructor exam (SIA) and the Fundamental of Instructing (FOI).
The sport CFI practical test challenges applicants with an intensive flight test and oral exam. Becoming a sport CFI is a big responsibility and should be taken seriously. We know that it can be a challenge to fly from the right seat, but this can be overcome. The FAA makes sure that only well-prepared applicants will pass the sport CFI test.
If you’re passionate about piloting and want to share your love of aviation, consider becoming a sport pilot certificated flight instructor. As a flight instructor, you can enjoy a very rewarding career.
