Flying in Poor Weather Conditions in a Small Plane

As exciting as flying a plane can be, it can also be very dangerous. One of the major threats that pilots often find themselves worrying about is encountering bad weather while flying. Not only can this put their life in danger, but also all the people who may be on board.

As a private pilot flying a small plane, you may find yourself wondering if it is possible to fly safely in bad weather. And if not, when does the weather get bad enough for it to be dangerous?

Can Small Planes Safely Fly in Bad Weather?

The simple answer to this is: depends. Not only does the type of plane you are flying determine how safe or unsafe a trip through a tornado might be, but so does your qualification as a pilot.

If you recently got your flying license but don’t have sufficient experience in flying a plane and are flying a plane with a basic engine with minimal instruments, it would be a good idea to stay on the ground when the weather gets stormy. You still have a lot of time to get familiar with flying in bad weather. However, if you must fly, it is better to ask an instructor to come along with you.

On the other hand, if you have a good amount of experience flying planes and are flying an aircraft with suitable instruments that can withhold aggressive flying environments, it will be safer to fly through.

Either way, the better option is to stay on the ground until the skies clear up unless you have an emergency and need to fly.
