How Long Does It Take to Become a Commercial Airline Pilot?

With the ever-growing demand for air travel, the demand for commercial airline pilots is also increasing. In fact, according to research conducted by Boeing, the commercial airline pilot industry will need more than 804,000 new pilots by the year 2037.

This brings us to one of the most asked questions “Do you require a college degree to become an airline pilot?” The answer is “No,” you don’t need a college degree to become a commercial airline pilot. However, it is a bonus to have one. Some common pilot degrees that you can pursue include Aeronautical Science, Aeronautical Engineering, Aviation Management, and Airport Management.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Commercial Airline Pilot?

It might surprise you to learn that it only takes two to three months to obtain a commercial airline pilot certification, which requires you to pass a written exam, a medical exam, and a minimum of 40 hours of flying time. However, even after that, it usually takes about two years to gain sufficient flying experience, which is equivalent to 1500 hours of flying time. During these years of training, the aviation company will give you more certifications that look good on your portfolio.
