Learning to Transition to a Different Aircraft

A+ A- A

Fleet of prop planesLearning to fly an airplane that you aren’t comfortable with can be a fun and challenging task. Transitioning to different kinds of aircraft is a great way to hone your pilot skills and learn about different flight characteristics. In this article we’ll go over three easy ways to help make your transition to a different aircraft as smooth as possible.

Transitioning to a New Aircraft

  1. Research – The first thing to do is gain an understanding of the new aircraft and the systems it uses. Below are a few areas to focus on when trying to gain a better understanding of your new aircraft:
    • Know how to start the engines and apply proper controls to maintain engine performance.
    • The aerodynamic qualities and unique handling characterists of the new aircraft.
    • Learn how to set up communication and navigation equipment in the new aircraft. Many avionics manufactureres have online training modules on which to practice.
    • Lastly, it’s a good idea to learn as much as you can about the electrical and hydraulic system. It’s important to have knowledge of these systems, but not completely essential.
  2. Establish Emergency Protocol – Emergency protocol will be similar with all kinds of aircraft, but you’ll still need to learn the specific nuances of your new aircraft before taking it to the sky. Identify any potential emergencies and memorize the procedures associated with each situation. Make a checklist of how to handle an emergency so that you can easily deal with it even when adrenaline and stress kick in.
  3. Practice Makes Perfect – There’s no better teacher than experience. If you aren’t comfortable taking your new aircraft in the sky yet, choose practicing on a simulator or by chair flying.
