Pilots’ Priority Checklist

paper with a pilots checklist on it

If left unchecked, distractions may wreak havoc on a flight. These distractions can range from simple ones to more serious emergencies. The best way to help pilots manage distraction is by remembering to prioritize three things – Aviate, Navigate and Communicate. Following this list of priorities (occurring in that order) can keep distractions at bay!

Aviate

There are many factors when flying an airplane. Preflight, navigation, flight control, weather, buttons, switches, and so on. The point of flying the airplane, or to “aviate,” is simply to keep the airplane under control. If satisfying a distraction means that you may lose control of the plane, ignore it! Aviate above all else.

Navigate

The second most important priority is to know where you’re at and where you’re going. Getting lost is not only a hassle but can also get you into trouble. For example, you may find yourself violating airspace because you are unaware of where you are. After you make sure you’re properly aviating, know where you’re at and get on track if you aren’t already.

Communicate

Lastly, it’s important to communicate. We know that talking on the radio can add to your workload. When you already have a lot going on, it can be difficult to remember to make your radio calls or to hear and answer ATC when they need to ask you something. Communication may fall third on our list, but it is important and can remind you to communicate. Do not prioritize communication over aviating and navigating!

When flying an aircraft, it’s important to make sure that you have your priorities straight! Aviate, Navigate and Communicate.
