The Importance of Following Instructions from Cabin Crew During Flights

If you fly frequently, you can probably recite the in-flight safety instructions from memory! However, the cabin crew gets the attention of the passengers and presents all the information before every single flight. This begs the question, what are the most frequently used safety measures and why do we need to follow them?

Take-offs and landings are the most dangerous parts of flying. These are when most accidents occur, so it is vital to follow the instructions to stay safe. While plane accidents are very unlikely, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Instructions from Cabin Crew

Below are the most frequently used safety measures and why it’s important to follow them:

• Window shades pulled up during take-offs and landings – If an emergency occurs, the cabin crew only has around a minute and a half to evacuate the plane, so every second count. Because of this, it’s important for the eyes of the passengers and crew to be adjusted to the light (or dark) outside or to spot a problem.
• Seats need to be in the upright position – Seats need to be in the upright position so that passengers are awake and alert during take-offs and landings. This is in case of an emergency situation. Additionally, seats in the upright position are locked, meaning they are safer for you in the event of an accident.
• Cell phones need to be in airplane mode – While the exact amount of interference from cell phones isn’t proven, they are known to cause at least some interference. Because of this, it’s important that phones are turned off or are put on airplane mode.
• You need to be in your seat during take-offs and landings – If passengers are in the lavatory or wandering the plane during an emergency, he or she may not be able to evacuate properly, causing danger to themselves and other passengers.

Next time you fly on an airplane, make sure you listen carefully to the instructions given to you by the cabin crew.
